The Berg River
Dam will in future be known as Autshumato Dam.
Earlier this year the dam was renamed after the 17th century Khoi leader, better known as 'Harry the Strandloper', by South African President Kgalema Motlanthe. (The Water Wheel, May/June 2009, vol 8, No 3). |

The construction of the Berg River Dam (Berg Water Project) commenced in 2005. The dam is situated near Franschoek in the upper catchment of the Berg River. | ||||||||||||||||||||||

Concrete
faced rockfill dam (CFRD) 930m long and 62m high with an embankment
volume of 4millionm3 and a gross storage capacity of 130million m3.
Outlet works comprising a dual wet and dry well multilevel intake tower (pictured here) 63m high with a 5.5m diameter reinforced concrete outlet conduit, allowing a maximum release of 200m3/s. Side channel spillway with a discharge chute terminating in a deflector bucket and plunge pool, with a maximum discharge capacity of 1 050m3/s. (Ref 1) |
