The Upper Steenbras Dam stores water from its own catchment as well as water transferred by the Palmiet Pumped Storage Scheme. Water from the Upper Steenbras Dam can be released to the Lower Steenbras Dam or conveyed to the City's Faure Water Treatment Works via the 160 Megawatt Steenbras Pumped Storage Scheme which is owned by the CCT's Electrical Engineering Department, and the City’s Faure Pump Station. Water from the Lower Steenbras Dam is treated at the Steenbras Water Treatment Works and piped to Cape Town. (Ref 1)
