Firstly, the 640m long Woodhead Tunnel was built between 1888 and 1891 to divert the Disa stream to the western slopes of Table Mountain. The Woodhead Dam was then built on the Disa stream in 1897. The Woodhead Dam was the first stonemasonry dam built to store water for Cape Town.
