MKOMAZI ESTUARY: Land and Estuary Uses

Residential

Agricultural

1996 (Ref.2): Approximately 21% of the Mkomazi catchment was under agriculture. Most of this was commercial forestry and subsistence farming with some temporary commercial irrigated agriculture, temporary commercial dryland agriculture, sugar cane, and improved grassland also present. (Ref 2)

Industrial

Recreation
1996 (Ref.2): The Mkomazi estuary is used as a ski boat base, one of the major attributes being the fact that the mouth of the estuary is seldom closed. The estuary is also used for fishing, canoeing and occasional water-skiing. Many people also come to the estuary to relax or walk along its banks.
