MKOMAZI  ESTUARY: Physical Features

Topography

Bathymetry
1978 (Ref.1): "In 1920 the estuary was reported to be not less than 6 m deep at any point. At this stage a launch (with 32 passengers) used to operate on the estuary taking people up to the Old Drift Hotel. Coasters, such as the SS Somtseu (Mercury Pictorial 17 July 1914) could also enter the estuary and tie up alongside a wharf at the old sugar mill. Although periodic scouring takes place during floods, the estuary is at present an average of 1.5m deep at low tide, with only one or two spots 3 m to 4 m deep."
