HARTENBOS ESTUARY: General information and location


 

General

The Hartenbos is a double-sandspit estuary (Heydorn and Tinley 1980).  The major sandspit lies on the south-western bank and a secondary short sandspit on the opposite north-western bank.  The mouth is open periodically and its configuration is variable. (Ref 1)

 

Location (co-ordinates)
The mouth of the Hartenbos is situated at 34°07'S, 22°07'E, about 7,5 km north-west of Mossel Bay harbour.  (Ref 1)

Dimensions
According to planimeter measurements, the water surface area is 18 ha.  If the saltmarsh area is included, the estuarine area is 31ha. (Ref 1)
