The Hartenbos is a double-sandspit estuary (Heydorn and Tinley 1980). The major sandspit lies on the south-western bank and a secondary short sandspit on the opposite north-western bank. The mouth is open periodically and its configuration is variable. (Ref 1) | ||||||

The mouth of the Hartenbos is situated at 34°07'S, 22°07'E, about 7,5 km north-west of Mossel Bay harbour. (Ref 1) | ||||||

According to planimeter measurements, the water surface area is 18 ha. If the saltmarsh area is included, the estuarine area is 31ha. (Ref 1) | ||||||
