Fisheries Development Corporation - experimental and commercial cultivation of oysters. Approximately 30 ha water area reserved for the purposes int he area west of the railway bridge. At present 6 ha are utilised by the two companies accommodated (A Genade, pers.comm) . (Ref 1) |

Approximately 450 tons of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) are produced annually in South Africa, with a total production value of some R9.765 million (1997 rands, Hoffman et al. 2000). The Knysna estuary currently produces about 105 tons per year (S. Burton, Knysna Oyster Co., pers. comm.), with an estimated value of R3.15 million. (Ref 2) |

Recreation | ||||
| The Knysna Lagoon is very beautiful and a popular tourist resort with excellent yachting and angling facilities (Day, 1981). Bulpin (1978) lists angling, canoeing, diving, camping and caravanning, swimming and walking, as activities. Estuary uses that have been observed include yachting, water ski-ing, motor-boating, rowing, bathing, angling, oyster cultivation, bird watching. (Ref 1) | |||||

Conservation | ||||
| Featherbed Nature Reserve: Featherbed Nature Reserve is a prime example of eco-tourism and in order to protect the splendour of the natural beauty, access to the Reserve is controlled. Numbers are limited and visits are only permitted in the company of the Reserve's specialist guides. | |||||
