SPOEG RIVER ESTUARY: Water Quality |

|
|
Physio-chemical Characteristics |
![]() |
A survey was done in 1980, during a time (October 1980) when the mouth was closed. Pools in the north western corner of the estuary was fringed by Phragmites reeds and appeared to be eutrophic at the time of the survey. This was possible due to the high oxygen levels (16mg/l). The water has an opaque milky-green colour, possibly indicating a mixed algal and bacterial bloom. There were also some blue-green algae present. High nutrient levels were probably the result of big flocks of ducks, utilising the sheltered pool. (Ref.1.) |

Pollution |

A survey for pollutants, such as sewage, oil, metals, pesticides and herbicides in 1980 revealed that no pollution took place which would introduce the above pollutants to the estuary. (Ref.1.) |
