Dryland crops cover 31% of the upper and 63% of the lower catchment, while the total irrigated area is less than 1%.(www.environment.gov.za/soer/reports/rivers/free%20state/Free%20State.pdf)
    SOILS                                    

During winter low flows, salt encrusts the rocks in the middle reach while the upper reaches are often dry. (www.environment.gov.za/soer/reports/rivers/free%20state/Free%20State.pdf)

 

Clay Loam: This soil type extends from the sandy loam area further eastwards into the headwaters of the Sand, Vet, Elandspruit and Renoster Rivers. (Ref 1)

Clay Soil: A relatively small area at the confluence of the Sand and Vet Rivers. (Ref 1)
