The Jukskei River, one of the main tributaries of the Crocodile River, flows northwards through the Hartebeespoort dam and ultimately drains into the Indian Ocean. (www.ewt.org.za/news_fullstory.aspx?newsID=441)
The 77 650 ha catchment area of the Jukskei drains a large portion of the Witwatersrand. It is bound by Johannesburg in the south, Midrand in the north, Roodepoort in the west, and Kempton Park in the east.  (www.ewt.org.za/news_fullstory.aspx?newsID=441)
This densely populated region impacts negatively on the river water quality.  (www.ewt.org.za/news_fullstory.aspx?newsID=441)
The Jukskei River is one of the largest rivers in Johannesburg . It is mostly shallow and not deep enough for transportation. It is also often very polluted, and occasionally has outbreaks of cholera.  The banks are prone to bursting, especially in summer when rainfalls are the heaviest for the year regionally. This spells disaster for the impoverished residents of the Alexandra Townships who are often forced to build makeshift shacks along the river banks owing to overcrowding and the need for access to water for washing, drinking and cooking. The Jukskei river is the largest of the three rivers draining the northern and north-eastern suburbs of the Witwatersrand.  Its source is in the Bezuidenhout valley , east of Johannesburg.  The Jukskei River then flows downstream past Lombardy East, Alexandra Township, past northern residential areas like Kelvin and Buccleuch and then through more rural areas like Waterval, Leeukop and Midrand.  It is joined by the Modderfontein, Braamfontein and Sand Spruits before its confluence with the Crocodile river, which flows into the Hartebeespoort dam.  The catchment covers an area of 800 km2 and includes many of the highly industrialised and urbanised parts of Johannesburg.
