The Crocodile River originates North of  Dullstroom in the western parts of the catchment area. The Crocodile River flows through mountainous terrain and into the grasslands of the Lowveld.. It flows eastwards past Nelspruit and into the Komati River at Komatipoort, situated upstream of the Mozambique border. Mountain ranges in the north and the south are separating this sub region from the upper Komati River catchment and the Sabie River catchment. (Ref 1)
The Crocodile Catchment covers about 10 450 km2 (Ref 2)
The Crocodile River rises in the Steenkampsberg Mountains at an altitude of more than 2 000 m above sea level. The sources of the streams in this region are often within wetlands. Further downstream the cold waters gather into fast flowing mountain streams. The Elands River, a tributary to the Crocodile, rises on the grassland plateau of the Drakenberg Mountains near the town of Machadodorp.  (Ref 2)
Downstream of Kwena Dam, the Crocodile River winds through the scenic Schoemanskloof for approximately 55 km to Montrose Falls. In this part the river is 15-20 m wide with large rocky pools interspersed abundantly with riffles and rapids. The river slopes are steep and thick riparian forests cover the riverbank.  (Ref 2)
