The upper reaches of the Eerste River receive the country’s highest recorded rainfall of 4 000mm per annum. (Ref 1)
The Eerste River and its tributaries lies within the winter rainfall region.  Annual rainfall over its catchment ranges from 300mm on the mountains  to 700mm or less on the coastal plain.  About 80 % of the rain falls in a series of winter downpours, which bring the river down in spate.  The Kuils River catchment is drier and the mean annual precipitation ranges from 800mm in the eastern hills to about 500mm near the coast.
