The Buffels flows only during winter months from May to August, and the driest month is February. There is a big local variation in rainfall as the recorded average total annual rainfall for Cape Point over a 57 year period was 355mm while at Smitswinkel Bay situated 6km to the north of the Buffels(West), it was 698mm over a 31 year period.
