An arid climate with strong southerly winds currently prevails along this Southern African West Coast region. The rainfall is not sufficient to maintain continuous discharge of the smaller rivers, which sculpted their catchments areas during periods of wetter climate.  The mean annual rainfall in the upper reaches of the Spoeg River Catchment, ranges between 100 to 200mm.  In the lower reaches, it ranges between 50 and 100mm. 

Heavy fog is prevalent and some moisture is derived from this occurrence.  (Ref 1)
