The lower reaches of the Hout Bay River flow through the Hout Bay valley, which is dominated by large peri-urban and urban properties.  The lower Hout Bay catchment has gradually changed from agricultural to residential use. (Ref 1)

The Hout Bay River rises on Table Mountain and drains the sloping Black Table into two streams:  Disa Stream, which has cut deeply into disa Gorge, and the Original Disa Stream, which flows down from Klaasenkop above De Villiers' Reservoir.  (Ref 2)

There are 5 moderately sized instream dams and a number of small dams in the catchment.  Primary treated wastewater from the area is released into Hout Bay via a deep-sea outfall. (Ref 1)
