The Salt River is the last 2.5 km of a network of rivers and streams, draining the northern part of the Cape Flats, the eastern and southern slopes of Tygerberg Hills and the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.
Although the rivers and streams which compose the catchment of the Salt River are realtively small, all these watercources are of high sinificance for the Cape Town metropole with regard to the draining and flood control of the residential areas as well as maintaining the remaining ecosystems within the metroplole.
Many of the water courses are canalized and due to stormwater runoff from dense populated areas as well as from commercial and industrial areas in the lower reaches together with discharges from sewage treatment plants, the water quality for certain stretches of the rivers are poor
