    RAINFALL
The Olifants River catchment falls entirely within the winter rainfall region.  The eastern portion of the catchment comprising of the Doring, Ongeluks, and Tankwa tributaries lie in the rain shadow area which receives most of its rainfall in the winter months.  This region also receives a considerable amount of local rain by means of thunderstorms.  Rainfall in the eastern catchment is unreliable and rarely exceeds an average of 250 mm per annum.  The estuary also lies in an area of low rainfall. (Ref.1.)
Coastal fog is fairly common. Heavy dewfalls and fog accompany rain. (Ref.1.)
In summer strong southerly winds prevail along the coast.
