HYDROLOGY
The mean annual runoff of the Olifants River catchment is 1 220 000 000 m3. (Ref.1)
Winter floods occur wherever heavy rain falls in the catchment.  Major flooding in 1925 caused the estuary mouth to assume its current configuration. .  There is little river flow in the summer.  Period with highest flows is from June to September.  Both the Olifants and the Doring Rivers have rapid run-off characteristics.(Ref.1)
The Olifants River mouth is permanently open on the northern side.  On the southern side the estuary is mostly isolated from the sea by a sandspit.(Ref.1)
